Finding the Right Supplies for your Artwork

Whether you have been enjoying art for years or you have just started your creative explorations recently you will find that having the right supplies to do your work is essential. This is not to say that you have to spend hundreds of dollars for expensive supplies or equipment but what it does say is that you need to start out with decent quality supplies that will produce the type of results that you want.
Sadly many people never realize that if you use cheap paper and pencils that your results will be less than satisfactory, so it is important to find art supplies that have the ability to produce the results you want. Sure you can make a drawing on a piece of printer paper with a number 2 pencil but will you just give up in frustration because your drawings just don’t have the look that you want them to?
When choosing art supplies you should take the time to find out what other people use. Pencils, paper, colored pencils, and water colors do not have to be excessively expensive but if you take the time to find out what everyone else uses you will end up with supplies you can afford but will produce the results that you want. If you have ever talked to someone that drew on cheap paper for years and then finally bought a better quality of paper you will find that they cannot believe the difference that better supplies can make.
If drawing is your thing, you will want to find a good quality of paper, you can find paper in two types, you can either get sheets of paper or paper in a single pad, there is not a lot of difference between the two except buying the sheets allows you to decide the size of paper that you want, as well as it gives you a bit more variety in terms of the weight of the paper and the roughness of the texture.
Pencils are one of the easiest things to buy, you want to find a good brand that you like, try a few, this is really a personal thing, and then buy a good range of pencils from 8b to 6h. The letters refer to the hardness of the pencil, b is soft and h is hard, the higher the number the farther on that end of the spectrum it goes.
If you are going to draw there are a number of other supplies you will want to buy, you will need a good pencil sharpener, this is critical because the sharper your pencil is the more intense your details will be. You will also want to make sure that you have a wide range of erasers, this is a place where talking to others about what they use can be helpful, there are many different types of erasers, and everyone has their favorites, but some work better for some things while others will work better for something else. Again choose a variety and try them all out to see what you like best.
If you want to take your artwork farther than drawing you will have even more supplies to purchase, there are many different media so first you must decide which one you want to focus on. It is better to focus on one at a time if you are learning, this way you can learn all of the tools and techniques before you move on to something else. The tools you will need for each medium are also very different, keep this mind while you are deciding.
Water color is a great beginner medium as well, there are so many things you can do with it, and you don’t need a lot of supplies to get started. A good beginners set of water colors, brushes, a couple of books and some paper and a flat board to tape it to and you will be ready to go. Pen can also be fun to work with and does not require a lot of tools, a couple of disposable micron pens and some paper can be a lot of fun. Oil and acrylic are also popular but you must keep in mind that these media do take a bit more money to get started in; still there is a lot of pleasure to be gained in making paintings in this medium.
