It is a common knowledge that mobile industry is quickly developing these days. The smartphones have also been given important position in the variety of opportunities given by the mobile software developers. In this respect it is hard to overrate the role of Symbian operating system. People that are familiar to the secret mechanisms of Symbian operating system activity confirm that the system is responsible for the promotion and improvement of the effective cooperation of all the smartphone technologies. The quantity of phones that run Symbian operating system is augmenting with time, and nowadays their amount is much higher than 32 million.
Although the majority of end consumers do not pay particular attention to what operating system is installed at their cell phone, it's really significant to realize that the OS has a considerable effect on the way of the smartphone operation and all the software installed. The role of OS on a mobile phone can be briefly described by fulfilling the below mentioned tasks:
- First of all, the OS should make it simpler for the application of the smartphone to use the hardware and the network of the phone;
- In addition, the significant task of operating system on a smartphone is to avoid conflicts between different applications.
If there are a great diversity of applications on the smartphone, there is a need for the best operating system. It concerns specifically the situation when the applications on the mobile phone are provided from various sources, such as:
- Applications from the OS supplier
- Applications given by the manufacturer of the mobile phone
- Applications from the network operator
- Applications given by the corporate information technologies department in relation to the smartphones that are applied for business purposes
- Applications given by the third parties
- Purchased or downloaded applications.
Taking into account that the developers of the applications are specifically interested in getting their applications installed on the smartphones of different models from different manufacturers, it's quite logical that the developers of applications focus on the application programming interfaces given by the operating system, but not on the phone networks and hardware. It is significantly more beneficial to develop the applications that can be applied on a great diversity of cell phones and networks. The variations between the phones and networks are taken into consideration by the OS, not by the software developers.
This way, the developers of applications may be sure that their applications initially invented for smartphones from a definite manufacturer can be easily used at the cell phones from other manufacturers, generally without any necessity for changes to the mentioned software.
