A bit about us

Gudi’s objective is to impart a touch of simple beauty to city life, so alienated from native roots and memories. We see beauty in simplicity, and the meaning of knowledge in art.

Our tribal and folk communities achieve a harmony of beauty, knowledge and art. Their art is an expression of centuries of living in communion with nature. Their huts, hamlets, bows and arrows, clothes, ornaments and vessels are all symbols of simple beauty, and sources of community knowledge. They are inspired by the colours and shapes of plants, trees, creepers, roots, and birds and animals. Their art brings awareness from nature and gripped by anxiety and urgency.

Gudi’s aim is to provide rooted art as an alternative to city-centered art that is limited to glitziness. We also hope to help crafts communities that are rich in skills but are struggling to face the onslaught of modernity.

Gudi plans to bridge the country’s tribal and folk communities. Our priority is to recognise their artistic excellence and present their art on one platform. It is Gudi’s desire to make Indian tribal art and craft work accessible and affordable to city art lovers, and to use the modest margins to strengthen the crafts communities.

Also on our plans are camps, workshops and demonstrations. This gives art lovers an opportunity to watch crafts people at work, and to share knowledge and friendship.

Gudi is thus not just a place to buy and sell art objects but a centre for cultrure.
