SEM (or Search Engine Marketing) involves marketing and advertising strategies that take place in common search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This type of marketing requires the business or individual to pay for,or bid on, significant keywords that relate to the business or individual's product and/or website. As a result, short advertisements are now placed within the search engine allowing a company to be visible during searches based on their submitted budget.
What does this mean for car dealerships? Well search engines are commonly set to a specific location (where the user is located geographically). Therefore, consumer's keyword searches automatically return local results. So it is very important to not only take advantage of search engine advertising, but to know how to show up within the first 3 results in your area while maintaining your online marketing budget.
It does not take a marketing or internet guru to do this. However, an effective & strategic online marketing campaign can be very time consuming. And yes, there is terminology that you may not understand. Short-tail keywords, Long-tail ketwords, negative keywords, SEO, SMS, and so on. That is why there are industry professionals to do it for you.
Here is an experiment for you as an owner or member of the sales team. Go to a popular search engine, type in keywords that relate to local dealerships (i.e. "Columbus used cars", "Akron dealerships", "Ohio new car dealerships"). What you are likely going to see is the same 2 or 3 dealerships showing up at the top 3 positions every time. Now look at vehicle or title reports and see where they measure up in your region.
There are a couple of reasons that they are showing up in the top 3-5 positions every time. And there is also a reason why they are doing well month after month in your area. The reason that they are #1 every search could be because they have an unlimited budget ($5000/mo +) when it comes to SEM because that is where the majority of their focus is. In this case, it is also possible that a majority of the keywords are getting co-op'd, or reimbursed, by corporate.
However, if you do not have that kind of budget, I suggest that you outsource to a company that can maintain and analyze your budget, keywords, and your ROI. Therefore, you do not have to outbid Mr. Moneybags dealership on highly-searched keywords, but simply show up in searches that relate to your dealership or product that will generate traffic to your site.
Companies like Local Auto Marketing will research your area's dealerships & find short and long-tail keywords that will make your site relevant in searches. As a result, you can be effective with a minimal budget, while receiving analytical reports that will determine if you are capitalizing on your ROI.
