By the end of 2011, American cell phone companies will recognize that slightly over 50% of cell phones purchased this year are smartphones. They will also see that smartphone sales and distribution has increased by over 83% in ONE year. What does this mean?? It means that technology is manipulating the culture and everyone around us. Technological breakthroughs are becoming the norm.

It also means that technology is changing the way we make decisions. The latest buzz in the technology world is QR codes. QR codes are the distorted looking, bar-code-esque symbols we are seeing in advertisements across the globe. With the simple scan of your smartphone over one of these codes, you can be directed to a video, website, picture, a coupon, or any other kind of promotional offer or incentive.
In 2011, we have seen the QR code make it's way onto car dealership lots everywhere. What many dealerships are doing is placing a QR code on the stickers of each of their vehicles on the lot and having the code direct "after-hour" customers to a specific web page for that car. This page can include pricing, fuel economy, or even the carfax page.

As a Result, people are now able to price-compare from the comfort of their couch after shopping the lots all evening. The link from the QR code on their phone is now saved and stored for them to remember the vehicle on your lot for upcoming decisions they will make upon purchasing.

Dealers are also turning to their parts and service departments to help utilize the use of QR codes on the lot. Service managers will often offer a promotion or incentive for the dealer to put on the QR code that is placed on the car sticker. Thus, bringing the customer back onto the lot. An example would be placing "scan this code for $5 off of your next oil change" underneath the QR code on the car sticker.

This now motivates the consumer to come back to the lot for a cheap oil change, while looking over the car they were interested in when they scanned the code.
So if you think that "QR codes don't sell cars, salesman do", than you are right. The code cannot talk, lie, or do a circus act for the potential customer.

But it can talk to them without saying any words when the sales team has all gone home and the buyer is on the lot looking at a car that you might have sold if you had gone with what every dealership around you is doing, and that is QR code advertising. Time to step out of your daddy's footsteps on his lot, following his marketing principals, and join the rest of America when it comes to modern technology.
