Up in the Air with George Clooney playing the part of corporate layoff expert Ryan Bingham focuses on the complexity of interpersonal relationships.
Ryan Bingham is hired to help ease the downsizing of long-term employees across the country. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and looks forward to the 290 days he is going to be away. But, duting this time his world changes drastically. Along the way, both he and his college graduate colleague Natalie played by Anna Kendrick find out that they lack a great many important things in their lives and have to learn how to become better people.
Clooney's Mr Bingham is a lonesome businessman whose private life includes random dates with beautiful girls at many airports he visits frequently. His wallet overloaded with credit cards from airlines that accumulate his mileage, hotel status perk cards which let him avoid encountering dissatisfied travelers and go straight to the front. Having been uninvolved in the life of family and relatives for years, Ryan is the brother who exists but cannot be counted on. His job has turn into his new family. He reckons whether he should, or really would like to, attend his sister's wedding ceremony – the little girl whose life he should have been involved with after the death of their dad.
The story contains many plot lines, details and sequences that need to be seen fresh to get a better understanding of the movie. What you may initially find a comedy telling about a supercilious guy who finally becomes a pleasant man full of emotion is actually a mix of comedy and drama.
Clooney gives a brilliant performance and makes his character very realistic. He is excellent at playing both the self-important workaholic obsessed with his job and career prospects and the vulnerable romantic able to show true feelings of affection and compassion to people around. The drastic changes he undergoes throughout the film are interesting to follow and make you think about the true values of human life.
