Microsoft Word is one of the most extensively used file formats. It is a word processing programme which is designed for creation of professional documents, such as CV, newsletters, fax cover sheets, official reports, legal documents, brochures, technical manuals etc. It is an powerful tool for students, business people and even individuals to have on their computers.
The Word document format was developed by Microsoft. Its original name was Multi-Tool Word. The first addition was introduced in the eighties. Since then, there have appeared several other versions, including of the latest addition introduced in 2008. The next version of Word is said to come to the market in 2010. It will comprise a great many new features typical of other applications in the Office 2010. The 2010 addition will include new WordArt styles and effects replacing the old ones.
Although Word is a component of the Microsoft Office system, it is also sold as a standalone application and included in Microsoft Works Suite. Word's document formats are denoted either by a. doc or. docx file extension. The newer ".docx" extension signifies the Office Open XML international standard for Office documents and is used by Word 2007 for Windows, Word 2008 for the Macintosh.
