After spending several years working in someone else's tattoo shop learning the skill you and creating your own customer base, the time has finally come for you to think seriously about striking out on your own and opening up your own studio. This can be a big move and one that you need to make sure you are really ready for, not only do you need the reputation and a good customer base to get started, you are going to need a studio of your own and all of the equipment it takes to set up shop and start doing tats.
To start with you are going to need to find the perfect location, you need a studio that is going to be somewhere that is relatively easy for your current clients to find and that has plenty of foot traffic passing by so that it attracts new customers as they pass by. Large windows can often pay off as those passing by will be able to see you and any other artists that you have working in your studio with you at their chosen craft, you might be surprised at how many new customers will come in after they have seen you at work through the window.
OK, now that you have your studio, the next thing you should be looking for is more skilled tattoo artists to staff it with. Just like the studio you have been working in, you will find that most tattoo studios have several artists working in them. There is a very good reason for this; each artist tends to have their own area of specialty. For example, yours might be old school Chinese styles such as dragon and symbolism, one of your artists might be an expert in portraits, another in whimsy and so forth. In order for your new shop to be successful, the more variety you can offer the wider your potential customer base is likely to be.
Now that you have a stable of artists, the right place for your new studio and an opening date planned, the only thing left for you to do is stock your new place with all of the tools of the trade. Since you are just getting started, you are probably working on a very tight budget, this means finding that one supplier who is going to be able to provide you with everything you need at prices that are going to fit into your budget.
This may not be as easy as you might think. If you start looking online you are going to find that there are literally dozens of online retailer that sell tattoo gear. In the last few years getting a tattoo or even several has become not only socially acceptable, but extremely popular. This has boosted the number of places selling tattoo gear to more than most of us can keep track of.
However, what you are going to find is that many of these businesses are setting themselves up as specialty stores and are interested in only one thing, which is to make as much money as possible. In order to do this, they will only sell the most expensive lines of tattoo equipment one piece at a time and at the highest possible prices. There is no way your budget is going to support buying the equipment you need to get started this way.
What you need to be looking for is an online retailer who has complete starter kits for you to choose from. More realistically you need someone who carries kits that are going to have everything each of your artists and of course you are going to need to get started. If you can find kits that have multiple guns, you will find that this can save you even more money.
If you are going to buy kits, make sure that they come with a generous supply of ink to get everyone started. This way you have enough to last as you get started and keep everyone of your artists supplied with ink until you have enough money coming in to be able to afford to restock. Of course the most important thing of all is to make sure that all of the supplies are priced to be well within your budget and are of guaranteed quality.
