If you are in any kind of business that sells products or services to the general public, you are going to find that having your own call center is considered to be a necessity. Not only do you need people to handle all of your inbound calls, if you make your money in sales of any kind, you are going to need a team of experts handling your outbound calls as well. Most companies here in the US have long since understood the need for having their own call center.
The big problem that many American companies have come across in the last decade has been with outsourcing this work to offshore companies that are staffed with people that barely speak English and as such are very hard for their customers to understand. In most cases these people also lack the knowledge necessary to be of much service. This is not to say that all offshore call centers are this way, but then again a lot of companies are starting to bring their call centers home.
If you do not currently have your own call center and have been outsourcing to one that you are not happy with, perhaps it is time you gave serious thought to putting one together. One thing to keep in mind is that this is going to take a lot of hard work and time; you can't simply hire the first ten people that answer your ads and give them a desk and a phone. This is a perfect recipe for disaster; you are going to find that the best way to get started is to hire a team of call center consultants.
A call center consultant is a person or a company that will typically have many years of experience working in the field. They are going to be knowledgeable in all aspects of starting a call center from concept to finished working center. Not only with the personnel involved but with making sure you have the right location, the right furniture, the telephony equipment you are going to need and many other little details.
One of a call center consultant's most important tasks is helping you to recruit the right people. You cannot hire just anyone and expect them to be what you need. The consultant will often take care of interviewing applicants with you and making sure that you have the best team right from the start. They will provide a full program of training, starting with teaching each new employee how to be the best possible customer service representative they can be.
They will spend time in the classroom and in a test lab setting working with "real" customers learning how to handle every situation flawlessly. They will also spend a fair amount of time learning about your company, you products and all of your company policies. This way they will be in a much better position to help every customer that calls in or any sales call that you ask them to make for your company.
The bulk of their training however, will be spent dealing with an unlimited variety of well-trained customers. These "customers" will put your recruits through every conceivable problem and personality type to ensure that when they finally go live and have to deal with your actual customers, they are more than ready for whatever happens to come their way. This may be the most important investment you can make in your new call center as this is exactly what your customers are going to be looking for when they call in.
One of the biggest mistakes most companies make when they establish their own call centers is that they do not take the time to properly train their call center agents. Instead they hand each agent a series of flash cards or a flip book that has "all the answers" in it and expect this to provide the customers with the level of customer service that is going to keep them coming back. Of course the vast majority of the time this simply does not work and turns customers in ex-customers.
