What’s your relationship with your clients? Would they even recognize you outside of the hair salon? Would they recognize you outside of your “salon appearance”? Your business is not just about the services you offer and the products you sell, but it’s also about your relationships with those who do business with you. If you master the art of building rapport and maintaining relationships, your business will explode and reward you in ways you’ve only hoped for.

If you haven’t heard before, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. The key phrase is “until they know how much you care”. People do business with people they like and they continue to business with those they know and trust. So before potential client’s decide to hand over their money to you they must first like you to some degree. Once they’ve given you their money the first time in order for you to be able to convert them into a repeat client and hopefully a lifelong client they must know and trust you.

Instead of focusing all of your attention on recommending this product or that service to your clients, focus on how you can learn to develop rapport with people who may be potential clients and how you can build upon your relationship and trust factor with existing clients, to be able to turn them into lifelong clients.

As a professional hairstylist, hair salon owner or other member of the beauty industry your title alone comes with a certain level of authority. Clients and potential clients look forward to your advice and recommendations and will freely spend accordingly, but only if they know you care about and take interest in them first. Customers are the blood of every business, treat them well and watch your business flourish. If your clients can’t recognize you walking down the street, you should know that chances are they won’t remain your clients for long.

Here are a few tips for you to help build rapport & nurture current relationships with your clients:

1. Use their names. Be sure to use your client’s names whenever you communicate with them and be sure that everyone in your business does as well.

2. Be sure to get their email address so that you can keep in contact with them outside of the salon and keep them updated with specials and what’s happening in your business.

3. Remember the names of their children or other important family. Remember their names so that you can ask about them and start conversations.

4. Learn what they like and what their hobbies are. Do this so that you can ask questions and seem interested in what they have going on.

5. Listen when they tell you what’s going on in their lives. Listen so you can engage them in conversation and follow-up.

There you have it, 5 fantastic steps to building rapport and nurturing relationships with your clients. Follow them and watch your salon business grow.
