There aren’t many businesses that are as naturally suited for socialization as that of a hairstylist. Stuck in your chair for a specified length of time on a regular basis trusting you to make them look picture perfect, your clients talk to pass the time. Over a number of visits, over a number of years, you get to know your clients, and you have probably noticed that the better you get to know your clients the more often they refer you to friends. Yes, socializing is the key marketing strategy of hairstylists who don’t even know they are doing it.
Now that the world has gone high-tech, online social networking offers stylists an even greater opportunity to connect with clients and potential clients between visits. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. offer professional stylists an even great opportunity to connect with their clients and form an even greater bond. Whether you haven’t yet embraced social networking on any level or you haven’t yet reached out to clients within these networks, it’s time to consider social networking as a key marketing strategy for your business.
Let’s look at how some of the most popular sites can help you connect with clients reach new clients.
Facebook – Facebook is probably the most popular option, and it is the first place you should start. If you already have a Facebook profile, you’re on the right track. If not, don’t let Facebook overwhelm you. Start simple and like anything else, once you get the hang of it, it will grow.
How to use Facebook
You can use your Facebook profile, or if you are ready for the next step, you can create a page for your business (we will cover how to do this in a future article). Start by asking clients if they are on Facebook, and if they are, suggest that you either become friends (or if you have a business page that they like your page). You should include your Facebook information on your business cards too.
However you decide to connect on Facebook, personal or business page, you need to post relevant information for your clients. Ideas for relevant information include specials, industry news, client photos (of your best work, of course), hair care tips and more — anything related to the work you do. Don’t be afraid to post personal information too, after all this is special networking and your clients want to know you. Of course, it is important to remember to use discretion, however, chances are your clients like you as a person too so they will probably be interested in you.
Twitter – Don’t be afraid. Twitter is fast-paced but very simple. In a nutshell, Twitter is 140 character conversation. Short and sweet. Like creating a Facebook page, once you set up an account the next step is to tell clients and friends and add your Twitter name (or handle) to your business cards too.
How to use Twitter
Since Twitter is a conversation of short bursts, you have to start “talking” to get the conversation rolling. Generally, people you follow on Twitter will follow you back, so start by going to some of your favorite industry companies, websites, publications, etc. and following them. By following people in your industry and striking up a conversation, other people on Twitter will start to follow you as well, but you have to make the first move. Like Facebook, you should post relevant industry and personal information (see content ideas above). The more often you post, the more opportunities people have to find you. When posting to Twitter, you can “talk” to other people on Twitter by adding @ before the handle, like @DollFaceMKTNG. You can also use “hashtags,” which is basically the # sign before specific popular phrases to your industry. This will help people searching for industry information to find you. For example #hair, #haircolor, #hairstyles, etc.
