Exterior doors typically have two types of locks: a deadbolt lock and a spring bolt lock. Spring bolt locks generally only apply a thin layer of security, because they are easy to pick by relatively unskilled lock pickers. All that is required to pick a spring bolt lock is the application of force to the bolt, and in many cases this can be done with a small, flexible piece of plastic. Deadbolts, however, cannot be moved into their "open" position unless the lock cylinder is rotated by a key or by the turning knob located on the inside of the door. Deadbolt locks are far more resistant to unauthorized entry than spring bolt locks. Having both types of locks on your doors discourages burglars, who generally look for easy targets.
What Makes a High Quality Deadbolt?
Low quality deadbolts don't always hold up when someone tries to break down a door. Some people add a bit more security to their deadbolts by attaching strike plates with screws long enough to reach the frame, rather than just the door jamb. Plating of brass or chrome usually indicates a deadbolt that will not last as long. Stainless steel throw bolts are best. Modern deadbolts are made of three basic parts:
• The key-accessible cylinder on the outside of the door
• The throw (the bolt itself), which slides in and out of the jamb
• The thumb turn, which allows the lock to be unbolted from the inside
The bolt should extend an inch beyond the edge of the door into the jamb in order to work optimally. The best deadbolts are made of solid steel, brass, or bronze.
Function First, then Form
When purchasing a deadbolt lock, start with function rather than looks. The main weakness of deadbolt locks is that they are vulnerable to an intruder prying the door apart from the jamb or strike plate (which some people overcome with long latch plate screws that extend into the door frame, rather than just the jamb). If a deadbolt is not made of high quality stainless steel, brass, or bronze, and if the bolt does not extend a full inch from the door, keep looking.
Deadbolts with Form and Function
Fortunately, many of today's European deadbolts combine security, flawless function, and great looks. These deadbolts not only provide the security that comes from stainless steel strike and latch plates with solid brass cylinders, but also give a door style that any homeowner will be proud of.
