With all those different types of permits out there it can be hard to tell which ones you need and which ones will just be a waste of time. However, if you don’t get the right ones the expenses can become substantial. Every business needs to obtain either a federal, state or local permit before they begin construction, and the type of permit you need will almost always vary by industry. Here’s a brief glimpse at what you should be taking into consideration before you jump into applying for a permit:

Local Permits

The cities in which you decide to open your business probably require their own licensing and permitting. For example, in the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago, Naperville and Springfield all require separate, local permits, and the type of permits within these cities each differ as well.

State Permits

Each state requires business to have an occupational license and with all 50 states requiring different items, it can be difficult to keep up with the permitting system. Every state has its own government website that business owners can research before building, and it’s a good idea to check these out if you want to avoid fines.

Federal Permits

These types of permits are necessary if the government regulates your company. So, for example, if you sell firearms or own a fishery then you would need to apply for a federal permit.

Always do your research before you set out to apply for permits. It may take time, but in the end, it will save you from fines and more expenses. Once you receive your permit, display it proudly in the window of your new store…because that’s usually another regulation cities and states ask you to follow.
