When an iPod is formatted on a MAC OS X computer it uses the HFS+ file system format, which allows it to fuction as a boot disk a Mac computer. If it is formatted on Microsofts Windows the FAT32 file format is used. The new Windows-compatible iPod's the default file system used on the iPod line switched from HFS+ to FAT32 and can be reformatted to either file systems except the iPod shuffle which can only be strictly formatted to FAT32 file format. When a new iPod except iPod Shuffle is plugged into a computer running windows it will be formatted with FAT32 and if plugged into a computer running Mac OS X it will be formatted using the HFS+ file format system.

Unlike most players simply copying a file onto the iPod does not necessarily mean you will be able to properly access them. In order to guarantee that the files will be playable and viewable on the iPod you have to ensure that you are using software that has been specifically designed to transfer media files to iPods. There are however third party applications that are available besides iTunes which will allow you to copy other file formats that are playable on the iPod's.

iTunes starting from 7 going to later versions can transfer media from the iTunes Store on an iPod to a computer as long as the DRM is transferred to any of the 5 computers that have been authorized to access the media files.

Media files on iPods are stored in hidden folders together with a proprietary database file. The hidden files on the iPod can then be accessed by plugging the iPod onto a host computer and enabling hidden files. The audio files can then be recovered manually by dragging them into the iTunes Library or by using third party software.

So why not visit Apple online and get accurate information on the types of file formats your iPod supports as well as getting information on the authorized software so you can avoid purchasing software from hackers and cons that will otherwise cause your iPod to malfunction in the long run.
