If you’re a diabetic dentistry patient, hopefully you already know that there’s a strong connection between maintaining your dental health and managing your diabetes. You should be aware that, because diabetics tend to have weaker immune systems than the typical patient, you are probably more prone to infections like periodontal disease, and should take extra precautions to avoid them. You should also know that when you are infected, the problems can develop much more quickly and become much more severe, so frequent checkups are a must to make sure you can catch any problems early. Finally, you should know that when your body is fighting an infection like periodontal disease, this makes your blood glucose levels harder to control – so you’ll need to take extra care of yourself.

Now, a new study has come out of Australia than underscores just how crucial good dental health is for patients with diabetes.

According to the study, which was conducted by The George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia, diabetics who lose all of their teeth are twice as likely to die then diabetics in the same age group who have managed to keep the majority of their teeth.

The study covered almost 11,000 adults who were aged 55 to 88, all of them with Type 2 diabetes. And the results are, frankly, frightening. During the five years the study monitored them, twice as many diabetics without teeth died.

This is especially disturbing because diabetic patients are naturally prone to gum disease, and gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. The bottom line is that if you’re diabetic and putting off visiting the dentist for any reason, it’s probably time to pick up the phone and schedule a check-up now.

The good news is, even if a problem has already started, you’ll have a much better chance of tackling it if you get your dentist involved.

If you’ve already lost teeth, dental implants may be able to protect your remaining natural teeth by keeping the bone around them healthy and alive.

And even if you’ve lost all your teeth, studies have shown that, when the general population is surveyed, people with dental implants live longer than people with non-implanted bridges and dentures, possibly because their quality of life is so much higher.

If you’re diabetic, you may worry that more extensive procedures like implant dentistry are unavailable to you. In fact as long as your diabetes is under control, a trained diabetic dentist will more than likely be able to develop an implant treatment plan that will work for you, either alone or in partnership with a specialist.

The right diabetic dentist will also be able to keep your smile as healthy and beautiful as the smile of a patient who doesn’t have diabetes – putting everything from a healthy mouth to veneers, whitening and even smile makeovers within your reach.
