Before reading about water audit services lets study about what does Water audit really means? Water audit is basically the measure of impact the organization have on water resource. So, the next point to understand is how does this water auditing process takes place, water audit does this by determining organizations’ total water consumption and the amount of water lost from its distribution system due to leakage and many other such reasons. For e.g. unauthorized or illegal withdrawals from the systems, pumping inefficiency and many such type of losses to the organization. The expert water auditing creates a detailed report of the water distribution system, maps water intensive units, resulting into effective management of water resources with proper billing and improved reliability. It also helps in diagnosing the problem faced in recommending appropriate solution to the problem. It is an effective tool in understanding and assessment, efficiency of the water management service, present performance level and the adaptability of such systems keeping future expansion in mind.
Now let’s talk about the available standards for auditing these water resources. Water audit is not a new concept that it came in existence recently, but as water is always seen as ‘free’ commodity, so no guidelines or BIS Code has been set for water audit in the country. Keeping this point in view, the Central Water Commission has taken a strong step to make “General Guidelines for Water Audit”. These “General Guidelines for Water Audit” are prepared as conceptual guidelines to cover all the three main sectors where water is used viz. domestic, industrial and irrigation. These guidelines are made keeping the aim to standardize, introduce and popularize the water audit system mainly for conserving water in all sectors and which will definitely improve the efficiency of water use.
Some of the main categories of water audit, decided based on the extent of consumption of water; the Water Auditing can be divided mainly into four categories.
• Large Water users- These are the users who consumes more than 15 million liters per day. These are mainly users who use water for irrigation purpose.
• Medium Water users- These users results into the consumption of 3 MLD to 15 MLD on daily basis. Mainly these users are the park and small hotel users.
• Small Water users- These are the users who mainly use around 0.5 MLD to 3 MLD of water.
• Tiny Water users- These are the users who use less the 0.5 MLD of water, these are basically the domestic users.
