The following interview with Shawn Collins, a leading expert in the field of affiliate marketing, you must prove instructive for the reader.
Shawnr
has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the field and now runs his own affiliater
program management and consulting firm.
Since this interview is itself limited, you are invited to learn more about Shawn industry experience and advice, read the renounced his books, conferences, blogs, articles, reports, and weekly radio show.
The reader can also meetr
Shawn at the Affiliate Summit, a "can't miss" conference for thoser
interested in excelling in the competitive world of affiliate marketing.
Q.
Shawn, how would you describe your initial experiences with affiliater
marketing?
A.
It was in 1997.
I had a dial-up account on AOL, a 14.
4 modem and the desire to earn more money.
At the time, I didn't know a thing aboutr
creating websites, marketing, etc.
But I spent a tutorial on writing HTML, and AOL picked up the basics.
Then, I created a hideous, singler
page site about New York City and put up some Amazon links.
I have never had a cent on this site.
Q.
What you have to endure growing pains at first? What were the main obstacles and challenges of this time? A.
Back then, there was a monopoly on registering domains, and it costr
$35 a year.
At that time it was a bit too expensive for me (I did not know that a good investment, would be a short name).
That was a trend -r
an unwillingness to invest in my affiliate efforts.
I wanted to do with the tools, hosting, etc..
That definitely delayed my progress.
Q.
What was your first "Ah-ha" moment? How did you incorporate ther
lesson learned into your affiliate marketing business?
A.
The first time I had my e-mail warning from Amazon with information on fees.
Back then, there was no option to loginr
to an interface - just a periodic email with affiliate stats.
When I realized it was true that I make money in this way, I was excited and motivated.
This persuaded me that I was wasting my time working inr
magazine publishing - it was time for me to get into a line of work thatr
was stimulating and rewarding.
With my limited experience of affiliate marketing, I managed to get a job with a start-up called in 1997 medsite.
com, and I bluffed my way intor
running the affiliate program there.
I enjoyed my work since.
Q.
Without naming names, have the affiliate program that has not kept its promises and / or to provide adequate compensation? What steps you have to get this situation and what advice can you give to others address in order to avoid this situation? A.
Lots of affiliate programs lie in their recruiting efforts - theyr
talk about how easy it is to earn commission from them.
This is simply not true - it is not easy.
I just don't pay attention to most recruitingr
efforts from affiliate programs.
I would encourage members to ignore claims of easy money and high EPC - the important thing is to test everything and to sponsor us what you.
Q.
As affiliate marketing has changed in the last seven years? What strategies do you implement now that do not or years ago? A.
The industry has matured greatly.
Seven years ago, many affiliate marketers content sites that rely on banner 468x60.
The analyticsr
were primitive and fewer companies offered affiliate programs.
Now the industry is so diverse.
Essentially, any way to market onliner
is being leveraged by affiliates.
including price comparison, domaining, Video, SEO, e-mail, Social Networking, PPC, reward programs, etc..
If I could turn back time, I would have started up multiple nicher
community sites back then for popular topics.
Well, if it would grow well nourished and profitable partner sites.
Q.
If you have a marketing a product or service affiliation, it is likely that this individual can effectively market its own products or services? People should be made in the development and marketing of their products or other products instead of marketing / services? A.
I'd say anything that is already selling online can be effectivelyr
marketed through an affiliate program.
Sell your products or services can certainly be more awards at best, but then you get a lot more risk, even.
If somebody has the infrastructure and know-how to sell a certain productr
or service, I'd say to go for it.
But do not take calculated risks.
Q.
What are the basic mistakes that beginners tend to make? A.
Lack of investment and understanding.
E very difficult to affiliate marketing if you are ready to spend time and money required to develop, a long-term strategy.
And affiliate marketing isr
most certainly not a quick endeavor - it takes patience to endure andr
succeed.
Q.
What are some of the creative (perhaps seldom used) strategies tor
employ in the affiliate marketing field?
A.
Go Directly behind the banner.
There are a lot of excitingr
opportunities out there with Web 2.
It's just a matter of figuring out ar
unique angle.
Q.
How long does it realistically take to build a full-time income withr
affiliate marketing, assuming "full-time commitment"?
A.
I do not think can qualify and quantify the passion.
And to me,r
passion is an essential ingredient in affiliate marketing success.
In addition, there are so many variables like the size of a particular orientation, margins involved, competition, etc..
Q.
It is easier to generate revenue from this type of marketing now or it was easier years ago? (Please note the competition, the use of the Internet, the introduction of AdWords and Pay-Per-Click, etc..
)
A.
It has never been easier.
There was certainly less competition in the past,r
but also less in the way of options of advertisers to choose and methodsr
to promote them.
In addition, there is the continued growth of electronic commerce.
Ir
think the opportunities for success are just as healthy now as they werer
years ago.
Q.
While I know that you do not recommend any particular affiliater
marketing programs, in your estimation, what are the "hottest fields?"
A.
The more \"hot fields \" is a slippery slope.
They change over time.
I think the hottest area of any individual should have made the area, which you most interested in.
You can certainly go out there as a mercenary andr
promote the most lucrative thing at the moment, like ringtones or debtr
consolidation, but I suggest going with a long-term plan in an area thatr
interests you.
Q.
Is there any affiliate marketing software that is a "must" when oner
pursues an affiliate marketing venture?
A.
It really depends on the type of membership.
There are softwarer
programs that help optimize affiliate efforts for different affiliates.
For example, if you were working with data feeds, please check the WebMerge.
Q.
What are your views on affiliate marketing networks like Commission Junction and LinkShare? A.
I think they're the backbone of the industry.
The affiliate networks account for most of the major affiliate programs and also provide a convenience because you can consolidate a lot of activity in the context of a login to some.
I would like to see them work together to establish standards.
For example, there is a lack of standard data feeds, which is a challenge for people who use them.
Q.
Absolute statements made about the nature of the payment system more lucrative affiliate marketing (and its.
g pay per sale, pay per click,r
etc.
)? A.
In general, CPA seems to be more profitable, especially offers forr
products and services that are not physical items.
Q.
What influence, if any, will blogs make on the affiliate marketingr
landscape?
A.
I think some are in the nature, networks, merchants and affiliates the most influential operation.
For instance, Jangro.
com are likely to influence the decision of Commission Junction in order to change their plans on the Link Management Initiative (LMI).
Q.
What, statistically, the best way to market an affiliate program? A.
It depends on the vertical.
E-mail and PPC work well for some CPA, and established a web presence can be important for the sale of goods on a revenue share.
Q.
You can see some future trends in affiliate marketing? A.
Smaller affiliate programs.
Affiliate managers are working more closely with partners, less concentrated.
Also, I think we'll see anr
increasing number of affiliates embrace the opportunities out there withr
Web 2.
0 and roll out new tools with innovations.
Q.
What are the current projects there are in the affiliate marketing business, including working with the top affiliate? A.
My main focus is Affiliate Summit, the largest affiliate marketingr
conference.
Our last show had over 2,000 in January in Las Vegas.
r
We also have events scheduled in Miami (July 8-10) and London (Septemberr
28) this year.
I also have in management and consulting subsidiary, Shawn Collins Consulting, and publish an annual report called on the requirements, affiliate marketing AffStat.
I also have a blog at http://blog.
com where I post dailyr
about issues in affiliate marketing.
And I am the co-host with Lisa Picarille, editor-in-Chief of Revenue Magazine, the weekly show, Affiliate Thing, on webmaster radio.
FM.
Q.
What do you attribute your affiliate marketing success to (e.
,r
building content, writing articles, following footsteps of a mentor, forumr
participation, etc.
)? Please include all the words last advice for those candidates to succeed / excel in affiliate marketing.
A.
It is dedication, persistence and relationships.
I don't lookr
at my affiliate marketing activity as a job, but rather a fun, profitabler
hobby.
During the last decade I have been involved in the field, there are too many to list factors that contributed to my success.
But I'd sayr
the most important of all is to constantly endeavor to learn from others.
