As we look at the political landscape of our country, we see a nation that we hardly recognize anymore. The American Constitution has been turned into a parchment rag, our Christian heritage has been scrubbed from the history books, and now the government is recruiting our pastors, those individuals that should be standing for the freedom and liberties this nation was founded upon, to become complicit in their schemes to “tame the populace.”
Understand that recruiting the pastors and churches to support a tyrannical government has precedent. During the Nazi era, Hitler co-opted the Roman Catholic Church and the majority of pastors to support his regime. Few fought Hitler, and those who did, like Dietrich Bonheoffer, gave their lives because, like John the Baptist, they refused to compromise their values in the face of “Caesar”. Their Christian heritage demanded that they stand for the oppressed and enslaved.
We, as a people, are also oppressed and enslaved by the ever-tightening bands of government tyranny. There is no area of your private life that is not at the disposal of the American government or in its crosshairs. From your health care to your freedom of association and gun rights, the field of liberty is increasingly shrinking. And now the government is actively recruiting men of the cloth for their “clergy response teams”, with suggestions and educational materials on how to teach their congregations to “obey the government,” through a spin on Romans 13, the same scripture Hitler used to bring German pastors into his unholy fold.
How do we combat this? How do we return to the limited government of our Forefathers? The only way back is a return to the fundamental precepts of the American Constitution and a return to the faith that founded this country.
Glenn Beck’s rally in Washington D.C. proved one thing, if nothing else: we may be a people that have strayed from our God, but we are not a Godless people. We understand clearly our relationship with our Creator as well as the Judeo-Christian foundations of our spiritual heritage. We sense that we have fallen far short of the ideals we hold dear, but we hold them dear still the same.
We know that the only way back to freedom and liberty is through the precepts of our Christian heritage and the tenets of the American Constitution. We are a people endowed from God with certain rights, protections, and liberties.
Let us seize that freedom and hold tightly to it.
