The state of Jammu and Kashmir came into existence when Mughal emperor Akbar invaded Kashmir in 1586. Jammu and Kashmir is home to several valleys such as the Kashmir Valley, Tawi Valley, Chenab Valley, Poonch Valley, Sind Valley and Lidder Valley. The snow clad mountains and the natural beauty of this state attract many tourists.
The beautiful city of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, one of the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir is one of its kind tourist destinations. The most visited monasteries in Leh are- the Hemis monastery, the Shey monastery, Thiksey monastery and the Stok monastery.
The Stok monastery is en route to the Thikse monastery from Leh. It situated on the top of a hill. Shey monastery or the Gompa is a complex structure. The Shey monastery was built in 1655 by Deldon Namgyal. He built the monastery in the memory of his late father Singay Namgyal. Shey has the second largest statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in entire Ladakh. The Shakyamuni Buddha statue is 12 meters tall. It offers a spectacular view of the Thikse monastery, Stakna, Matho and Stok monasteries along with Leh.
