Founded in 1978, the Nagarjunsagar- Srisailam sanctuary, spreads over 5 districts; namely Kurnool, Nalgonada, Mahaboobnagar, Guntur and Prakasam. This sanctuary is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It was renamed as the Rajiv Gandhi wildlife sanctuary in the recent past and it is India’s biggest tiger reserve. Over a long distance, the river Krishna flows through the forest. Power and irrigation is supplied to the state by the Nagarjunsagar and Srisailam reservoir, located inside the jungle. For people all over the world, the reservoir and temples are a major tourist attraction.
Andhra Pradesh is a beautiful state with a long history. Mostly all southern states of India have a long history. This state has many temples and interesting monuments.
This sanctuary is different from the other wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of India because its land is rugged. Close to the forest is the huge Nagarjunsagar reservoir built on the river Krishna.
Providing shelter to the wildlife of the jungle are the dry deciduous forests, which make up the jungle. Three thousand five hundred and sixty eight square kilometres is the area of the sanctuary. The animals found in the sanctuary are panthers, tigers, chinkara, blackbucks, spotted deer, soft-shelled turtles, Nilgai, leopards and porcupines. For reintroducing crocodiles in the forest, efforts are being taken.
Many wildlife tour packages are offered by the sanctuary to its visitors. Tourists from all over India and from abroad visit the sanctuary. You must definitely visit this spectacular jungle as it has a lot of untouched beauty.
